Parts of PNV's Chapter 4

Searching for the Lost Expedition Team

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

   Rodriguez Ranch
The ten-day International Cockfighting Festival held illegally in Kingsville, Texas had attracted participants from as far away as the oriental islands of Borneo, Mindanao and Taiwan.
Worldwide cockfighting competitions and fighting-cock trading activities could boost the local business indirectly, so Rodriguez continued to risk hosting it as long as no animal rights activist’s demonstrations happened to attract media and none of those hooligans, outlaws or racketeers created outrageous illegal operations to endanger the general public and attract the authorities. Texas had made cockfighting illegal early in the century, pressured by animal rights groups, but the criminal element had little incentive to obey.
Word of this underworld event was leaked to the public and hit a national tabloid headline only when the giant owl unexpectedly preyed on the champion rooster, stolen from Professor Rochester when he went off for the SAR expedition.
Out in the field stood Mr. Rodriguez, the underworld’s “King of Cocks.” Generally, he appeared handsome, prominent or even nice, but when his contrasting foul temperament leaked through his sneaky sparkling glance during his outbursts—his subconscious bitterness, hatred and anger selectively redistributed to another ill-fated victim.
He was now growling menacingly at his careless right hand man. “Damn it! It’s a TEN million dollar cock, why would you just leave it out there alone on the open ground?”
“I let Billy have some fresh worms as a reward for swelling our pockets. I thought he’d be too tired after all that sex and fighting,” he replied.
“Damn you, it’s a god damn bird, not a human being! ….. Shit! Even the fucking owl wanted to fuck it! It’s gone now, you better go fuck those hens now!” he yelled angrily but actually his voice sounded desperate.
“Ahem…” Fuck you, boss…if it’s just a bird then why give it a human name? Why don’t you give your dick a name too? “Daddy Rod, good news for you! Our chicken pen was very noisy over the past few days and nights. I think those fertilized hens will soon hatch a basketful of eggs to produce at least a dozen of equal potential—future champion ‘snowballs’ just like their dad.”
“Damn! Can you count those dozens of little ‘snowballs’ before the eggs hatch? Which ones are going to grow up as hens or cocks? You better show me then!” Hmmm, boss…Actually you could employ such a specialist from China but it would cost quite a lot. “Got that? I want you to show me as soon as possible!” The man’s neck was suddenly strangled by a necktie but soon it was released by his mad boss.

                                                  * * * * * *
Dallas wandered in the Texas woods around King Ranch, attempting to trace the lost SAR team’s trail to the serescopter pilot’s reported coordinates. She had little luck over three successive days in locating anything resembling a PNV zone. Her maps and MPPS were useless in stirring up mythical or extinct creatures that would point the way. She saw no sign of an over-large owl and no sign of any strange mist.
She received an unexpected ff-call from President Churchill.
“Where are you now, young lady? Are you feeling okay today?”
“Oh hey, Dr. Churchill,” she greeted her godfather, foregoing the formality of his official title. “I am out here somewhere in Kingsville’s back country. I’m fine!”
“Oh, that sounds great! Alone again?” he asked in concern.
   “Yes.”
   “That’s sounds dangerous to me.”
   “Don’t worry, I have a gun.”
“Listen, young lady! I have just ordered a special rescue unit flown into Texas today from Capitol Hill to combine forces with the state fish and game and local law enforcement to search for the giant owl,” he informed her.
“You want me to join them?”
“No, no—no! They’re too macho for you! You can continue your search alone.  Let me see whether you or those macho men can find them first,” he challenged her, “but if you find them, you better lead Professor Rochester’s team back home as soon as possible.”
“How about the giant owl, quit looking for it? That’s the reason they remained out here after they recovered Baby Ruby, right?”
“Ahem—but due to their disappearance, the priority now is to get those five people back home to show their mamas they’re sound and alive. After that you can team up with Professor Rochester to get the owl,” he advised.
